A Classy Guy

In case any of you missed Conan's last Tonight Show last night, here's the really good stuff from the episode. (I scoured the internet for a better copy of this, like from Hulu or NBC, but they didn't have this as one of their highlights, so you get this video of it instead, which is actually fairly decent.)

I'm With CoCo

I'm taking sides--I'm with CoCo.

The past week's announcements, offers, and rejections came to a close today as NBC and Conan officially signed a deal to end his run on The Tonight Show. This makes me a little sad (as sad as one can be about people they've never met). I know what it feels like to be told you're the one, then when things aren't quite what you imagine you get dumped for the person who was there before you. It sucks. It sucks even more to have it played out in the public eye.

I truly think Conan got the shaft in the deal. Before this, I was a Jay fan and a Conan fan. While I was initially sad to see Jay go (especially when he was on top) I eventually got over it. I welcomed Conan at the earlier time and even got excited for Jimmy Fallon at Late Nite. And Jay. Well, I maybe caught a few snippets, but it was never appointment television (but which executive actually thought it would be?!--Bad choice NBC!). I don't make an appointment to watch Conan either, because it's past my bedtime when I have work and school, but in the summer or any other time I'm up at that time (which will be tonight and tomorrow to watch the end of Conan's wonderful run) I would definitely tune in.

When Jay returns in March, I don't think I'll watch. Something about the way things happened kinda changed my view of him. I'm not watching late night anyway, so it's not like anyone will notice my non-viewing. But I'll know that I'm sticking by Conan and the really bum deal he got. At least Jimmy Fallon's got to be pretty happy about things.

A Mini-Dose of Joy

Last night, after almost watching, at the recommendation of a trusted source, a British Comedy on PBS/KUED, I settled in to a long overdue viewing of Conan. He was hilarious, as always, and never more so as when he gave the audience a "Mini-Dose of Joy"--in the form of Puppies dressed as Cats:

My life has been crazy and full of a drama the past couple weeks, so thank you, Conan, for giving me that little dose of joy.

Late Night Trifecta

Yesterday, with my sitting in the audience for Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, I completed the Late Night Trifecta. That's right, I've sat in Jay Leno's audience (twice), been there for Conan, and now have completed it with Jimmy.

The first time I saw Jay I was in LA with my best friend Lindsay. We had just decided to not move there and got last-minute tickets for Jay. And when we got shown into the studio, we were told that there two available seats in the front section--the section that gets to run up to the stage and shake Jay's hand when he comes out! I remember Dolly Parton was a guest, and that Forrest Whitaker showed up at the end to tape some scenes of Jay for his movie First Daughter. Lindsay and I thought we were so cool.

Second time was was with my sister. I had gotten her tickets to the Rascal Flatts concert in LA for her birthday and we made a little road trip out of it. We had tickets for Jay the day we were driving there and were in a rush against time and traffic to get there by 3:30. It's a good thing I had been there once before and sort of knew my way around and how to get there, and we luckily made it there, with a little bit of running after parking the car, in the nick of time. We were let in after being last in line, and for some reason we were sat apart, even though we told them we were together. The guest as Elijah Wood, who I had quite the crush on at the time with his Frodo cuteness. Afterwards we went to the Hard Rock Cafe.

Read about my time with Conan here.

And now we come to Jimmy. All week I knew I wanted to go to his Friday show because the musical guest was Yusuf, better known as Cat Stevens. I really enjoy his music and remember my dad (or was it my mom?) had a cassette tape of his that we'd listen to while taking long trips for business. I was already planning on going early in the morning to stand in line to make sure I'd get in. But I was randomly checking out the Jimmy Fallon website when I saw you could put your name in for Band Bench tickets, and they were still accepting them for the show with Yusuf. I quickly filled out the form, and Thursday morning I got a call saying I had been chosen! I very enthusiastically said I would accept. What are Band Bench Ticktes, you ask? During the show we sit in the audience, on these wooden benched that fold down. Right before the musical guest comes out we get to leave the seats, they fold down so it doesn't look like there are empty seats on tv, and we walk down to the stage! We surround the artist on stage on these risers and platforms while they perform. Stef and I were right behind Yusuf as he sang two songs. Here's the video so you can see us; we're on the second row straight behind him, I'm wearing a black shirt with a little bit of white.

Hard Core for Conan

The late-night tv landscape is going to be changing pretty soon, so to make sure we didn't miss Late Night with Conan O'Brien's last remaining weeks in New York, Stefanie, Elin and I made the trek to Rockefeller Center to get standby tickets this morning. They're handed out at 9am, but you can't just role out of bed at 8:30 and get there and hope to get in. We didn't want to take any chances, and taking into account stories we had heard about only two stand-by ticket holders getting in and that Conan only has twelve shows left in New York, we arrived at 6am. We were first in line....for a whole hour! Taxis would drive by and look at us, businessmen walked by and asked what we were standing in line for today. It was brutally cold, and after three hours I couldn't feel my fingers and my toes were headed that way, too. But we were stand-by ticket holders numbers 1, 2 and 3!

So you get to leave after getting your ticket and don't have to return until 4:00. We all went home and took naps, showers. Then back to Rockefeller Center, where we still felt pretty cool being the first people in line. We get to go in after VIPs and people who have advance tickets; they let in 28 stand-by ticket holders. We still felt cool being first.

When you watch Conan on tv you'd never know how small his set actually is. The same is true for Jay Leno's set; both have an illusion of being large with their bands so far away when they're actually just across the room. Conan is hilarious, but seemed even more so as I got to watch him live, which is always the case when I see something live. The guests were great: the handsome and funny Jon Hamm, the cute and makes-me-miss-Ed Ginnifer Goodwin, and the uber-ly talented and musically diverse Theresa Andersson. A great way to spend a day in New York.
